![]() I wanted to make it clear that this post is not trying to cancel the show in any way. So the title of this post is The Weird Anti-Asian Racism in Shadow and Bone, but all I’ve done is sing the show’s praises. Kaz and Alina shaking hands and Kaz telling her, “The deal is the deal,” made me feel things.) It was totally unexpected to see one crew coming to work with the other, but it really worked! Here’s what I felt uncomfortable with Putting Kaz, Inej, and Jesper into Alina’s story added a new, interesting element. But I don’t hate the direction the show has taken. I’m still eagerly waiting for the actual Ice Court heist, Wylan Van Eck, and Kaz’s revenge on Pekka Rollins, of course. However, I think the show-runners did a good job crafting a seamless storyline that incorporated story elements from both the Grishaverse trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. So while I was excited to see the Dregs and their heists, I really just could not give a single ~hoot~ about Shadow and Bone itself. I adored Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, but the Grishaverse trilogy bored me to tears. I wasn’t impressed when I first heard that Shadow and Bone was going to compress the events of the Grishaverse trilogy and the Six of Crows duology into one timeline. I want everything their friendship had! EVERYTHING.Įvery single member of the Shadow and Bone cast is so talented and truly understood the assignment! I actually enjoyed the compressed timeline! Jesper amused with himself, and Kaz and Inej looking so appalled. This scene in particular I feel truly captures their energy. The chaos of the Dregs, who still haven’t met the other members that round out their group, was utterly heartwarming. ![]() I can’t pick my favorite moments or groups! The way the cast played off of each other on camera was just so spectacular. Because at least Mal is an interesting character now! The Shadow and Bone cast’s chemistry was absolutely off the charts (And I hope his character doesn’t get that stupid ass tattoo because it is without a doubt, bar nothing, the most embarrassing shit I have ever had the misfortune to read in my entire life.)īut even if Shadow and Bone takes Mal and Alina’s relationship the way it went in Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising, I’ll still be happy. I hope the show veers away from the ending it gave Mal and Alina in the book, and honestly that would be the perfect ending for me. And he was a damn sight more interesting and well-rounded in the TV show compared to the book. He had natural chemistry with Jessie Mei Li that translated itself well into the “childhood best friends to maybe lovers” vibe. Literal sunbeam both in Shadow and Bone and in real life.Īrchie Renaux was fantastic as Mal too. ![]() ![]() Suffice it to say, I think they did an amazing job portraying Alina. If I wrote down everything that I loved about Jessie Mei Li in this blog post, it would never end. However, Jessie Mei Li and Archie Renaux are both such excellent actors that they managed to make me ship them! I know – I was shocked too, to be honest. Most of all, he represented for me a more insidious kind of toxicity in relationships that exists in the real world: the relationship that insists you downplay yourself for your partner’s benefit. Why? Because he was absolutely bland and milquetoast (at least the Darkling and Nikolai were fascinating to read about), and he had no chemistry with Alina. But of this triumvirate of YA white boys, I hated Mal the most. Not the Darkling, not Nikolai, and most definitely not Mal. I don’t ship any of the male leads in Grishaverse trilogy with Alina. A version of Mal and Alina that makes sense But even if you haven’t read the book, seeing the expression on Inej’s face here, and watching her cross herself, not only gave me deep insight into Inej’s character without a single word spoken. If you’ve read Six of Crows, then you know Inej is Suli from West Ravka, and that her faith is a deep part of her character. Inej, who has snuck into the Little Palace with Kaz, witnesses this display. ![]() In this scene, Alina has just performed a display of her abilities in front of Ravkan military and nobility. ![]()
